Bamboo is basically just a grass which can grow 30cm (1 foot) in height, or over 30m (100 feet). It grows in many different places and climates, on mountains and in jungles, in Asia and in Europe. Some spread very fast, and some spread very slow. The fast ones are called runners, and the slower ones are called clumpers.

Bamboo has many different uses as well. It can be used to decorate a home, as building tools, paper, floors, etc.

The giant panda is mostly associated with the Gelidocalamus fangianus, but there are more types of bamboo growing in its habitat. These include the Fargesia spathacea, Sinarundinaria chungii, Sinarundinaria nitida, and Sinarundinaria fangiana.

When bamboo begins flowering it mostly dies. This sometimes happens to the bamboo the pandas eat as well. It can cause huge patches of bamboo to die off at one time, not leaving enough for the pandas. Often many have to be rescued from starvation when this happens.
