Fun Panda Facts

Even though pandas live in the cold Chinese mountain forests, they do not hibernate. To keep warm, pandas move to a lower altitude during the winter.

Pandas have an enlarged wrist bone that acts as a thumb, so they can grab bamboo stalks. Next to the thumb, they also have five fingers.

Scientists had a lot of trouble deciding whether the panda belonged in the bear, raccoon group, or their own separate group. After studying their DNA, they were eventually put into the bear group. (See a resemblance with the site name? To Bear or not to Bear?)

Although pandas seem like very quiet animals, they can make a whole range of sounds. These include bleating, roaring, growling, and honking. Young cubs often croak and squeal.

Pandas are carnivores, however they have adapted to living on bamboo. They will still eat small mammals, rodents, and insects whenever they can catch them though.

Giant pandas are very playful, and love doing summersaults. They are also very flexible for their unusually thick bones.

Even though a panda can give birth to two cubs, she will only take care of one. The other cub is left behind.

Panda cubs are no bigger than a stick of butter, pink, and hairless when born. The mother will cuddle them, and not leave the den for a couple of days, even to drink or eat.
